Overview

MT-CYB pseudogene 2 (MTCYBP2) is classified as a mitochondrial pseudogene related to the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome b gene (MT-CYB) but does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically accumulate mutations that prevent them from encoding active gene products. Unlike the functional MT-CYB gene, which is part of mitochondrial complex III and is essential for oxidative phosphorylation[1][4][7], MTCYBP2 has no known coding potential or established biological role. There is no evidence it serves as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or has relevance in human disease. Its appearance in some gene lists may reflect annotation of non-functional genomic elements, not functional or druggable targets.
