Overview

MT-ND1 pseudogene 27 (MTND1P27) is classified as a pseudogene, specifically designated as a pseudogenic copy of the mitochondrially encoded NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 1 (MT-ND1), but does not code for a functional protein[2]. Pseudogenes are typically non-functional segments of DNA that resemble known genes but lack protein-coding potential and biological activity. Unlike the true MT-ND1 gene, which encodes a core protein of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and is involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism and multiple disease processes[1][3][5][7], MTND1P27 does not encode an active enzyme and is not implicated in known disease mechanisms, biological functions, or drug interactions[2]. Therefore, MT-ND1 pseudogene 27 is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it participate in canonical pathways or clinical disease mechanisms. Note: - MT-ND1 pseudogene 27 is sometimes confused with the functional mitochondrial MT-ND1 gene. Only the true MT-ND1 gene encodes a protein core to mitochondrial complex I function and is implicated in various pathologies, including mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative diseases[1][3][5][7]. - Care should be taken not to misattribute biological or therapeutic functions of MT-ND1 to MT-ND1 pseudogene 27, as the latter is not functionally active[2].
