MT-ND2 pseudogene 12 (MTND2P12) is a nuclear pseudogene corresponding to the coding mitochondrial gene MT-ND2. Pseudogenes are genetic sequences resembling protein-coding genes but do not encode functional proteins, due to mutations or truncations. While some pseudogenes are transcribed and may have regulatory effects, MTND2P12 itself does not produce the functional NADH dehydrogenase subunit involved in mitochondrial electron transport. Recent transcriptomic studies have detected differential expression of MTND2P12 in Alzheimer's disease brain tissue, though its biological significance and relationship to disease remain speculative and subject to further research[2][5][6].
