MT-ND2 pseudogene 17 (MTND2P17) is a human mitochondrial pseudogene that shares homology with the functional MT-ND2 gene, which encodes a core subunit of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Pseudogenes like MTND2P17 are generally considered nonfunctional, as they do not produce functional protein products due to disabling mutations or truncations. No evidence supports a direct biological or disease-related role for MTND2P17, and it is not associated with therapeutic drug targeting or patient biomarkers. The functional MT-ND2 gene, by contrast, is essential for electron transport and cellular energy production, but pseudogenes such as MTND2P17 do not contribute to these cellular processes[1][2][3][4].
