Overview

MT-ND2 pseudogene 20 (MTND2P20) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene related to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND2, which encodes a subunit of Complex I in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Unlike the functional MT-ND2, MTND2P20 is a non-coding, non-functional genomic locus that does not produce protein, mRNA, or demonstrate biological activity. It is included in gene nomenclature records (for example, HGNC:42121) solely for sequence annotation and genomic mapping. It has no established biological function, therapeutic target role, nor pathological significance[2]. Key note: Pseudogenes such as MTND2P20 are common throughout the genome and are remnants of gene duplication or mitochondrial DNA insertion events; these sequences are not transcribed or translated into protein and are not considered therapeutic targets under current biomedical paradigms[7]. Additional context: The parent gene (MT-ND2) is a well-studied gene coding for a critical component of mitochondrial Complex I, with clear roles in electron transport and clinical disease when mutated[1][3][4]. However, MTND2P20 does not share these functions due to its pseudogene status[2].
