Overview

MT-ND2 pseudogene 22 (MTND2P22) is a non-coding pseudogene in the human genome, named for its similarity to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND2, which encodes a core subunit of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. MTND2P22 does not produce a functional protein product and is classified as a pseudogene without an assigned biological or clinical role. There is no evidence that MTND2P22 directly participates in disease processes or is a target for any drugs[4]. Key distinctions: The functional MT-ND2 gene encodes a protein critical for mitochondrial electron transport and has clinical relevance in several mitochondrial diseases[1][5]. MTND2P22 is NOT the functional MT-ND2 gene; it is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene and thus not a therapeutic target[4].
