MT-ND2 pseudogene 28 (MTND2P28) is a pseudogene homologous to MT-ND2, a core subunit of mitochondrial respiratory chain Complex I. Unlike the functional MT-ND2 gene, this pseudogene is not predicted to encode a functional protein and does not participate directly in electron transport or oxidative phosphorylation. Pseudogenes are non-functional segments of DNA resembling functional genes. MTND2P28 is distinguished from the protein-coding MT-ND2 gene, which encodes a subunit of mitochondrial Complex I and is involved in mitochondrial energy production and disease. Recent transcriptomic analyses have observed MTND2P28 as one of several pseudogenes that show differential expression in various tissues, notably being significantly downregulated in certain brain regions in Alzheimer’s disease cases compared to controls. The pseudogene’s precise regulatory or biological function, if any, remains unclear, but differential tissue expression patterns suggest possible use as a biomarker in research settings, especially for neurodegenerative disease. There is no current evidence linking MTND2P28 to drug interactions, protein function, or classical therapeutic target roles. No evidence supports MTND2P28 as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or drug target.
