Overview

MT-ND4 pseudogene 1 (MTND4P1) is a nuclear pseudogene; it is not protein-coding and is homologous to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND4, which encodes a core subunit of complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Pseudogenes like MTND4P1 arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations (such as premature stop codons) that prevent them from producing a functional protein. Because of this, MTND4P1 does not serve a direct functional, therapeutic, or diagnostic role, nor is it implicated in disease or pharmacological targeting. Its existence is mainly relevant in genomic studies, especially when distinguishing true mitochondrial gene function from nuclear pseudogene artifacts in assays[2][9]. MTND4P1 is not a therapeutic or functional target and should not be listed as such. It is a non-coding pseudogene, not involved in disease or pharmacology, and primarily of interest as a genomic artifact. Any confusion might arise from conflating MTND4P1 (the pseudogene) with MT-ND4 (the functional mitochondrial gene)[2][9].
