MT-ND4 pseudogene 2 (MTND4P2) is a non-coding nuclear pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene. Unlike the functional MT-ND4 gene, which encodes a subunit of mitochondrial Complex I essential for electron transport and ATP production, MTND4P2 harbors disruptive mutations leading to premature stop codons and does not encode a functional protein. Its presence in the nuclear genome reflects past evolutionary transfer of mitochondrial DNA into the nucleus, and while it can be detected by DNA sequencing, it is not expressed and plays no direct role in disease or cellular metabolism.
