MT-ND4 pseudogene 20 (MTND4P20) is a nuclear pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene but does not encode a functional protein product. While the functional MT-ND4 gene encodes NADH dehydrogenase 4, a core subunit of mitochondrial Complex I essential for electron transport and ATP production[1][2][3][6], pseudogenes like MTND4P20 may arise through the transfer and integration of mitochondrial DNA into the nuclear genome and typically acquire disabling mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons, rendering them non-functional[5]. As such, MT-ND4 pseudogene 20 is not considered a therapeutic target nor does it have known drug interactions, clinical utility, or roles in disease. Its only significance may be in genomic studies distinguishing nuclear pseudogenes from mitochondrial gene copies[5].
