MT-ND4 pseudogene 32 (MTND4P32)

Target
MTND4P32
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MT-ND4 pseudogene 32 (MTND4P32) is a putative human pseudogene related in sequence to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND4, which encodes a core subunit of mitochondrial complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase). Unlike the functional MT-ND4 gene, pseudogenes such as MTND4P32 are traditionally considered non-functional genomic elements that no longer produce functional proteins. Some pseudogenes can be transcribed into non-coding RNA and, in certain cases, act as molecular regulators (for example, as miRNA sponges), but there is no direct evidence that MTND4P32 plays a functional or disease-related biological role. Important note: This entry should not be conflated with the functional mitochondrial gene MT-ND4, which is a core enzyme subunit involved in electron transport, and is implicated in various diseases including Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy and others. MTND4P32, as a pseudogene, is not therapeutically actionable, does not encode a protein, and is not a recognized drug target.

02

Mechanism of action

None (not a target for drugs)

03

Biological functions

May act as a source of non-coding RNA with possible regulatory functions, such as acting as a miRNA sponge (competitive endogenous RNA), based on the general properties of some pseudogenes, not specifically demonstrated for MTND4P32
04

Disease associations

None specifically established. By analogy, expressed pseudogenes can sometimes modulate the expression of parental gene transcripts, but there is no evidence or established disease association for MTND4P32
