MT-ND4 pseudogene 7 (MTND4P7) is a nuclear-encoded segment of DNA that shares sequence similarity with the mitochondrial gene MT-ND4, which encodes NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4, a core part of complex I in the mitochondrial electron transport chain[1][5]. However, as a pseudogene, MTND4P7 does not encode a functional protein, is not translated, and does not have a recognized physiological or pathological role[5]. It can sometimes be amplified in genomic assays targeting the mitochondrial ND4 gene, leading to potential confusion in diagnostics and research[5]. Unlike the functional mitochondrial MT-ND4 gene, which is associated with diseases such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy or age-related macular degeneration, the pseudogene does not participate in cellular metabolism nor serve as a drug target[1][5].
