Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 1 (MTND5P1) is a non-functional genomic sequence similar to the MT-ND5 gene, which encodes a core catalytic subunit of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase)[5][3]. Pseudogenes such as MTND5P1 originate from the transfer of mitochondrial DNA fragments to the nuclear genome, and are characterized by mutations and deletions that prevent them from encoding a functional protein[3]. While functional MT-ND5 plays a critical role in cellular energy production and mitochondrial disease, MTND5P1 does not encode a protein, is not a canonical molecular target, and has not been associated with a defined role in disease or as a biomarker. In recent literature, mitochondrial pseudogenes are sometimes studied as potential regulatory non-coding RNAs, but for MTND5P1, no such function or clinical application is documented[5][3].
