Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 12 (MTND5P12) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene with sequence similarity to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND5, which codes for a subunit of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain) in its functional, mitochondrial-encoded form. Unlike functional genes, MTND5P12 does not encode a protein and is not transcribed or translated into an active enzyme. Pseudogenes such as MTND5P12 typically result from the integration of mitochondrial DNA sequences into the nuclear genome but accumulate mutations that render them nonfunctional[5][7][8][9]. These pseudogenes are not therapeutic targets, do not have known biological function, and are not implicated in disease nor therapeutically actionable. Key distinctions: - MT-ND5 (not MTND5P12) encodes a core protein in mitochondrial Complex I and is implicated in certain mitochondrial disorders[1][2][3][5]. - MTND5P12 is a pseudogene and does not code for any active protein, nor does it play a direct role in biological functions or disease pathways[5][7][8][9]. Entries related to interaction with drugs, biomarkers, disease roles, or safety concerns are not applicable to pseudogenes such as MTND5P12.
