MT-ND5 pseudogene 13 (MTND5P13) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene originating from a sequence highly similar to the mitochondrial *MT-ND5* gene. *MT-ND5* codes for a core subunit of mitochondrial complex I involved in the electron transport chain and ATP production[1][3][5][6]. However, MTND5P13 itself is a non-functional pseudogene (also called a nuclear mitochondrial DNA segment, NUMT), which means it does not encode a functional protein and does not participate in mitochondrial respiration or other biological activities[2][7][8]. Pseudogenes like MTND5P13 can confound genetic analyses due to their sequence similarity to functional mitochondrial genes, but they are not considered therapeutic targets, biomarkers, or drug receptors, nor do they play direct roles in disease pathogenesis or normal cellular function[2][7][8].
