MT-ND5 pseudogene 14 (MTND5P14)

Target

Molecular classification
Pseudogene

Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 14 (MTND5P14) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic sequence similar to the functional MT-ND5 gene but lacks the ability to produce a functional protein. MTND5P14 is not transcribed into a protein and does not participate in biological pathways or therapeutic mechanisms. Functional MT-ND5 (not the pseudogene) encodes a subunit of mitochondrial complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) essential for oxidative phosphorylation, but the pseudogene forms, including MTND5P14, are considered non-functional and do not contribute to cellular bioenergetics or disease phenotypes. In human reference genome GRCh38, MTND5P14 is located on chromosome 9. There is no evidence for its involvement in disease or use as a therapeutic target.
