MT-ND5 pseudogene 15 (MTND5P15)

Target
MTND5P15
Molecular classification
Other, pseudogene, nuclear mitochondrial DNA segment (NUMT)
01

Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 15 is a nuclear-encoded human pseudogene related to the mitochondrial gene MT-ND5, which encodes the NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 5 protein, a subunit of the mitochondrial Complex I of the electron transport chain. In contrast, MT-ND5 pseudogenes are non-functional DNA sequences embedded in the nuclear genome (NUMT) that may share sequence similarity with the functional mitochondrial gene but are not translated into protein and have no known biological or therapeutic role. They arise from mitochondrial DNA segments transferred to the nuclear genome over evolutionary time and contain disabling mutations that prevent them from being functional[9].
