MT-ND5 pseudogene 21 (MTND5P21) is a non-functional (pseudogene) genomic sequence with homology to the MT-ND5 gene, which encodes NADH dehydrogenase 5, a core subunit of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I[6]. Pseudogenes like MTND5P21 do not produce functional protein products and are not considered therapeutic targets. There is no evidence that MTND5P21 is directly involved in disease, drug action, or as a biomarker. Caution should be taken to avoid confusing MTND5P21 with the functional mitochondrial gene MT-ND5, which plays an essential role in mitochondrial electron transport and is associated with various mitochondrial disorders[1][3][4][5][6].
