Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 22 (MTND5P22) is a human nuclear-encoded pseudogene derived from mitochondrial DNA sequence related to the MT-ND5 gene, which encodes NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 5. Unlike the functional MT-ND5, MTND5P22 is a non-functional gene copy that does not produce protein or participate in mitochondrial electron transport or ATP production. Pseudogenes such as MTND5P22 are present in the human genome due to ancient gene duplications or mitochondrial DNA integrations; they are generally non-expressed and do not have a recognized biological or medical role. Therapeutic targeting, disease association, or drug interactions for this pseudogene have not been reported[6][1]. If information about biological function, disease association, drug interaction, or protein activity is attributed to MTND5P22, it is incorrect and should only apply to the functional MT-ND5 gene. Only annotations relating to pseudogene classification are appropriate for MTND5P22[6][1].

Mechanism of action

None.

03

Biological functions

None known (as a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein or exert biological function in canonical biochemical pathways).
04

Disease associations

None known. Functional MT-ND5 can harbor disease-causing mutations, but MTND5P22 does not have a known role in disease[1][6].
