Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 28 is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene related to the mitochondrial MT-ND5 gene. Pseudogenes such as MTND5P28 are segments of DNA that resemble functional genes but are non-coding and do not produce functional proteins. The functional MT-ND5 gene is a core subunit of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and is essential for oxidative phosphorylation and ATP generation in mitochondria. In contrast, MTND5P28 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in mitochondrial function, disease, or therapeutic targeting[4][6][8][7]. MTND5P28 is annotated by major gene databases as a pseudogene and lacks protein-coding function[4][8]. Unlike the active MT-ND5 gene that is associated with mitochondrial disorders (e.g., Leigh syndrome, MELAS, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy), pseudogenes such as MTND5P28 do not play an established biological or pathological role in humans[1][2][3][4][7]. There are no known drugs, disease associations, biological functions, or safety concerns related to the pseudogene MTND5P28. In summary, MT-ND5 pseudogene 28 is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or any recognized therapeutic target. It represents a non-functional genomic remnant with no direct relevance to disease biology or drug discovery[4][6][8][7].
