MT-ND5 pseudogene 3 (MTND5P3) is a nuclear pseudogene related to the mitochondrially encoded NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 5 (ND5). Unlike the active MT-ND5 gene found in mitochondrial DNA, MTND5P3 does not code for a functional protein. Pseudogenes like MTND5P3 can complicate molecular genetic diagnostics because their high sequence similarity to functional mitochondrial genes may result in false positive or ambiguous results in PCR, sequencing, or other assays. There is no evidence that MTND5P3 plays an active role in mitochondrial function, disease, or is a target of therapeutics.
