MT-ND5 pseudogene 31 (MTND5P31)

Target
MTND5P31
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Noncoding DNA
01

Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 31 is a segment of nuclear DNA that originated from the mitochondrial ND5 gene through a process where mitochondrial DNA fragments are incorporated into the nuclear genome (sometimes called "NUMTs"—nuclear mitochondrial DNA segments). Unlike the original ND5 gene encoded by mitochondrial DNA, MTND5P31 does not produce a functional protein. As a pseudogene, it cannot complement or substitute for defects in the mitochondrial ND5 gene and plays no known biological or disease role. It is not considered a therapeutic target, does not interact with drugs, and is not used as a biomarker. Its identification is important mainly for genomic studies and to ensure that functional studies of ND5 do not accidentally analyze this noncoding pseudogene instead of the true mitochondrial gene[2][6][5][7].
