Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 33 (MTND5P33) is a nuclear DNA-encoded pseudogene corresponding to the mitochondrial gene for NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 5 (MT-ND5)[6]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to functional genes but are typically non-coding due to disabling mutations or premature stop codons[5]. MTND5P33 does not encode a functional protein and does not contribute directly to mitochondrial electron transport or cellular bioenergetics. Unlike its functional mitochondrial counterpart, the pseudogene has no established role in normal physiology, disease, or as a drug target. It is not currently considered clinically actionable or relevant as a therapeutic or diagnostic biomarker. While similar mitochondrial pseudogenes reflect nuclear integration events and may be informative in genetics or evolutionary studies, MTND5P33 itself is not functionally characterized and is not known to be implicated in human disease[5][6].
