Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 34 (MTND5P34) is a nuclear pseudogene in humans that shares sequence similarity with the functional mitochondrial ND5 gene[4][6]. ND5 normally encodes a subunit of Complex I in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, but pseudogenes like MTND5P34 are genomic segments that resemble functional genes but do not produce active proteins. These nuclear-located pseudogenes have accumulated mutations (including premature stop codons) that prevent the production of functional ND5 protein[5][6]. MTND5P34 is not known to have a biological function, nor is it involved in disease or considered a therapeutic target. Its presence is the consequence of mitochondrial DNA fragments being inserted into the nuclear genome ("NUMTs"), a well-described phenomenon[5][6]. MTND5P34 is a noncoding pseudogene with no established biological function or therapeutic/drug relevance[4][5][6]. It is not a valid therapeutic target.
