Overview

MT-ND5 pseudogene 40 (MTND5P40) is a nuclear DNA pseudogene derived from the mitochondrial gene MT-ND5, which encodes NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5, a component of mitochondrial Complex I. Pseudogenes like MTND5P40 result from genomic insertions of mitochondrial DNA into nuclear chromosomes (known as NUMTs) and are nonfunctional remnants that do not encode active protein[7][8]. While the active MT-ND5 gene is crucial for mitochondrial electron transport and is linked to several neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, the pseudogene MTND5P40 has no known functional, biological, or therapeutic relevance[7]. There is nothing to suggest MTND5P40 encodes a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or has any drug interaction or therapeutic value—it is a noncoding pseudogene. It should not be mistaken for the functional mitochondrial MT-ND5 gene, which is an important bioenergetic enzyme[1][3][4][5][6]. The BioGPS gene report confirms that MTND5P40 is a pseudogene record with no described protein product or biological activity[7].

02

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None (No protein product; does not participate in biological functions like the parent mitochondrial ND5 gene)
04

Disease associations

None established (No known disease association for the pseudogene itself; the parental gene MT-ND5 is associated with mitochondrial diseases, but not this pseudogene)
