MT-ND5 pseudogene 9 (MTND5P9) is designated as a pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence similar to the protein-coding gene MT-ND5 but does not encode a functional protein[6][8]. MT-ND5 itself is an essential mitochondrial gene encoding a core subunit of Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase), involved in mitochondrial electron transport and ATP production[1][4][5]. However, the “pseudogene 9” version is listed as a nonfunctional genomic element with no known protein product or biological function, nor is it considered a drug target or associated directly with disease processes. Pseudogenes such as MTND5P9 may result from nuclear insertion of mitochondrial DNA but do not contribute to oxidative phosphorylation or mitochondrial disease phenotypes[3][6][8].
