MT-ND6 pseudogene 3 (MTND6P3) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the mitochondrial NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit 6 gene (MT-ND6). Unlike the functional MT-ND6 gene, which encodes a component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, MTND6P3 does not produce a protein and is not part of any known receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target[5]. Recent transcriptomic studies identify differential expression of MTND6P3 in neurodegenerative contexts—for example, underexpression in certain brain regions may be associated with protection in Alzheimer's disease—but no specific therapeutic or mechanistic action has been established for this pseudogene[5]. It should not be confused with the functional MT-ND6 gene, which is critically involved in mitochondrial electron transport and ATP production[1][2][3][4][6].
