Overview

The mu opiate receptor, also known as the μ-opioid receptor (MOR), is a member of the opioid receptor family and plays a central role in mediating the effects of endogenous opioids and opioid drugs. It is primarily responsible for analgesia, euphoria, respiratory depression, miosis, decreased gastrointestinal motility, and dependence.

Mechanism of action

Activation of the μ-opioid receptor leads to activation of inhibitory G proteins (Gi/Go), inhibition of adenylate cyclase activity, decreased cAMP levels, opening of potassium channels, and closing of calcium channels, resulting in reduced neuronal excitability.
