Mucin 1 (MUC1)

Target
MUC1
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Mucin, Type I transmembrane protein
01

Overview

Mucin 1 (MUC1) is a highly glycosylated type I transmembrane mucin protein overexpressed and aberrantly glycosylated in many epithelial cancers. It functions as a tumor-associated antigen presented to CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) via MHC-I, leading to tumor cell lysis. MUC1 expressed on activated T cells also functions as a negative regulator of T cell proliferation. MUC1 is a target for cancer immunotherapy and vaccines.
