Overview

Mucin-16 (MUC16), also known as CA125, is a large, membrane-associated glycoprotein that plays significant roles in both normal physiology and disease. It acts as a protective and lubricating barrier at mucosal surfaces and is heavily glycosylated. In cancer, particularly ovarian cancer, MUC16/CA125 is an established tumor marker used for monitoring therapy response and disease progression. Overexpression of MUC16 facilitates metastasis and modulates immune responses. It is being explored as a target for immunotherapy, such as CAR T-cell therapies.
