Mucin 19 (MUC19)

Mucin 19 (MUC19) is a gel-forming mucin and high molecular weight, heavily glycosylated protein produced by glandular epithelial cells in tissues such as the salivary glands, airway, and ocular surface[1][2][6]. It contains conserved cysteine-rich von Willebrand factor C and cystine-knot domains and extensive serine/threonine-rich repeats resulting in O-glycosylation and gel-like mucus properties[1]. MUC19 contributes to mucosal barrier function, immune defense by aggregating pathogens, and epithelial protection[1]. Dysregulated expression is associated with several diseases, including inflammatory disorders (e.g., Crohn’s disease, asthma, otitis media), some cancers (e.g., breast cancer, mucoepidermoid carcinoma), and autoimmune syndromes (e.g., Sjogren syndrome)[1][2][6]. MUC19 is not a classical receptor, enzyme, transporter, or direct therapeutic target, but serves as an important structural and functional element in mucosal immunity and disease[1][2][6].
