Overview

Mucin 5B antisense RNA 1 (MUC5B-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the MUC5B gene locus on chromosome 11p15.5[2]. As a cytoplasmic lncRNA approximately 434 nucleotides in length, MUC5B-AS1 forms an RNA–RNA duplex with MUC5B mRNA, thereby increasing its stability and leading to enhanced MUC5B expression[2][1][3]. MUC5B-AS1 has been shown to function as an oncogenic lncRNA in lung adenocarcinoma, where it promotes cancer cell migration, invasion, and metastasis by upregulating MUC5B. The mutual stabilization between MUC5B-AS1 and MUC5B may serve as a novel therapeutic avenue for chemotherapeutic intervention, although MUC5B-AS1 itself is not a current direct therapeutic target and no drugs are known to specifically interact with it[3][2]. Elevated MUC5B-AS1 and MUC5B expression have prognostic significance in lung adenocarcinoma but are not directly tied to other major disease categories[3][2].
