Mucin Layer of Tear Film

Molecular classification
Glycoprotein Layer, Extracellular Matrix Component
01

Overview

The mucin layer is the innermost component of the tear film, directly coating the ocular surface. It plays a critical role in stabilizing the tear film, maintaining hydration, providing lubrication, and protecting against pathogens and environmental insults. Deficiency or dysfunction leads to poor tear adhesion, increased risk for dry eye disease, inflammation, increased susceptibility to infection, and impaired wound healing on the ocular surface.
