Overview

Mucociliary clearance (MCC), also known as mucociliary transport or the mucociliary escalator, is a critical innate defense mechanism of the respiratory system. It functions as a self-clearing process that removes inhaled particles, including pathogens and debris, from the airways before they can reach sensitive lung tissue. MCC is essential for pulmonary hygiene and maintaining sterility in the lower airways. Disruption or impairment leads to increased risk for respiratory diseases.
