Mucoproteins are a class of high-molecular-weight conjugated proteins that contain a significant proportion of carbohydrates in the form of mucopolysaccharides (more than 4% by weight). They occur in mucosal secretions (mucus) throughout the body, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, joints, and reproductive tissues. Their primary roles are to form protective, lubricating barriers on epithelial surfaces, regulate permeability, and defend against pathogens and chemical injury. Mucoprotein dysfunction is implicated in disorders characterized by excessive or deficient mucus production, such as respiratory infections, chronic diseases, and certain cancers. Drug interaction primarily occurs via the use of mucolytic agents that target mucoprotein structure to reduce secretion viscosity and improve tissue function.
