Overview

Mucosal cell lipid membranes and inflammatory cell membranes represent the physical and functional boundaries of cells within the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. These membranes are primarily composed of phospholipid bilayers that provide a structural barrier against luminal pathogens and toxins while facilitating cellular signaling (NIH, 2022). In inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis, these membranes are the site of intense oxidative stress and the production of lipid-derived inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins (PubMed, PMID: 23544941). Therapeutic agents like mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid) exert their effects locally by incorporating into these lipid environments to scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit membrane-associated enzymes (StatPearls, 2023). Additionally, treatments involving exogenous phospholipids aim to repair and stabilize the mucosal barrier, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing (ScienceDirect, 2021). Targeting these membranes helps restore the barrier function and dampen the localized immune response in the gut.
