Overview

A mucosal dendritic cell is a specialized antigen-presenting cell (a type of dendritic cell) located at mucosal surfaces such as the gut, lung, and reproductive tract[1][5][6]. These cells act as immune sentinels: they sample antigens from the environment, process them, and present them to T cells, thereby regulating the balance between immune tolerance (to harmless antigens and commensal microbes) and immunity (to pathogens)[1][6][9]. Mucosal dendritic cells can induce tolerance via regulatory T cell activation and can also drive inflammatory immune responses depending on the context (e.g., infection)[3][5]. Subsets are defined by surface marker expression (e.g., CD103, CX3CR1), and their dysregulation has been implicated in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease[2][9]. Due to their critical immune-modulating functions, they are the subject of vaccine research and immunotherapy, but they are not a conventional molecular drug target like a receptor or enzyme[5][7].
