Mucosal epithelial cells are the principal cellular components of the mucosal barrier that lines internal body surfaces including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts[4][7][1]. These cells form a continuous monolayer providing a physical barrier against pathogens, toxins, and environmental insults[2][5]. They perform specialized functions depending on location, including secretion of mucus (which traps and neutralizes microbes), absorption of nutrients, and interaction with both innate and adaptive components of the immune system[1][2][4][5]. In host defense, they act as the “first responders” to invading pathogens and are often the initial site for viral and bacterial infection[4][2]. While they are critical in diseases of infection, inflammation, and cancer, they themselves are a heterogeneous cell type, and not a therapeutic target in the molecular sense. Interventions at the mucosal surface (for example, drugs modulating the immune response or preventing pathogen entry) typically act on molecular receptors or pathways in or on these cells, rather than on the cell population as a whole. In summary, "mucosal epithelial cells" are not a correct designation for a molecular/therapeutic target; it is a complex and anatomically diverse cell type, relevant to disease and therapy primarily as a site of pathogenesis, barrier, and immune interaction—not as a single molecular entity[4][7][1][2].
