Overview

Mucosal epithelium refers to the layer of epithelial cells that forms the outermost component of the mucous membrane (mucosa), which lines body cavities and internal passageways exposed to the external environment, such as the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. It comprises one or more layers of epithelial cells, which may be squamous, columnar, or other common epithelial types depending on location. The primary functions are to provide a physical and immunological barrier to pathogens, secrete mucus for lubrication and protection, and, depending on location, carry out absorption and sensory roles. As a tissue, the mucosal epithelium plays a central part in maintaining homeostasis and defending against external insults[1][3][7][9].
