Overview

"Mucosal healing" refers to the restoration of normal appearance and function of the intestinal lining after damage from inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. It is typically defined by endoscopic criteria—such as absence of ulcers, erosions, bleeding, or friability—and may also include histologic criteria like absence of neutrophilic infiltration. Mucosal healing has become an important treatment goal because it correlates with better long-term outcomes for patients—including reduced relapse rates, fewer surgeries/hospitalizations, and improved quality of life. However, there is no universally accepted definition; different studies use varying endoscopic scores (e.g., SES-CD for Crohn’s disease; Mayo score for ulcerative colitis) or histologic endpoints. Mucosal healing itself is not a molecular entity but rather an endpoint reflecting successful therapy-induced repair/regeneration of gut epithelium. In summary: Mucosal Healing does not refer to a discrete molecule/receptor/target but instead describes an important clinical endpoint in IBD management. It should not be treated as a canonical drug target entry.
