Overview

Mucosal immune cells constitute a specialized branch of the immune system residing in the mucosal linings of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. These cells, including intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), lamina propria lymphocytes (LPLs), and dendritic cells, are organized into structures like mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) to provide a first line of defense against pathogens (StatPearls, 2023). Their primary biological role involves maintaining a delicate balance between immune tolerance toward commensal flora and active defense against harmful microbes (Mowat & Agace, 2014). In diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, the dysregulation of these cells leads to chronic inflammation and tissue damage (Neurath, 2014). Pharmacological intervention often targets specific receptors or adhesion molecules on these cells, such as the alpha-4-beta-7 integrin, to modulate their recruitment and activity within mucosal tissues (Feagan et al., 2013). Consequently, they are central to the pathophysiology of various inflammatory, infectious, and allergic diseases.
