Therapeutic strategies aiming for mucosal enhancement often utilize mucosal vaccines, adjuvants like Cholera toxin B subunit, or probiotics to stimulate localized immune responses (Kiyono & Azegami, 2015, NIH). This approach is particularly relevant for infectious diseases, where localized immunity can provide a first line of defense that systemic immunity might miss. However, the challenge in drug development lies in achieving potent activation without triggering chronic inflammation, autoimmunity, or the induction of oral tolerance, which can negate the intended protective effect. Consequently, while 'mucosal immune system enhancement' describes a therapeutic goal, drug discovery efforts focus on specific molecular triggers within the mucosal environment to achieve this state.
