Overview

Mucosal mast cells are a specialized subset of mast cells predominantly residing in the mucosal linings of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, where they act as frontline effectors of the immune system. They play key roles in regulating epithelial barrier function, innate and adaptive immunity, allergic responses, and secretion of numerous inflammatory mediators. MMCs respond to a wide range of environmental, microbial, and endogenous signals, releasing pre-formed and newly synthesized substances such as histamine, proteases, and cytokines. Their dysregulation contributes to several pathological conditions, including allergies, inflammatory diseases, barrier dysfunction, autoimmunity, and cancer. As a cell population defined by location and phenotype rather than a single molecular marker, they are not a discrete molecular drug target but are therapeutically relevant through modulation of molecular pathways and surface proteins expressed on their surface.
