Mucosal pentraxin 1 (MPTX1)

Target
MPTX1
Molecular classification
Pentraxin family (short pentraxin), Protein, Secreted protein
01

Overview

Mucosal pentraxin 1 (MPTX1) is a short pentraxin protein highly homologous to other pentraxins such as serum amyloid P (SAP) and C-reactive protein (CRP). It is predominantly expressed in the colon mucosa of rats and mice, where its mRNA and protein levels fluctuate with dietary intake of heme and calcium. These properties suggest a role for MPTX1 as a nutrient-sensitive marker of mucosal health in rodents. However, in humans, MPTX1 is not functionally expressed due to a premature stop codon, and its physiological role is unknown. It is not considered a validated protein target in pharmacology or human biology, and should not be confused with neuronal pentraxin 1 (NPTX1), which is a different member of the pentraxin family with known functions in the nervous system[1][3][4].

Biological functions

Unknown (Function not established; predicted to be involved in mucosal immunity or response to nutrient status)
03

Disease associations

Potential biomarker for gut health in rodents (expression sensitive to dietary factors such as heme and calcium which modulate colon cancer risk)Not linked directly to any human disease due to lack of functional expression
04

Biomarkers

In rodents, mucosal pentraxin 1 may serve as a nutrient-sensitive biomarker responsive to dietary heme and calcium
