Overview

Additionally, specific mucosal proteins like mucins are the primary targets of mucoactive drugs, such as N-acetylcysteine, which modify the structure of these proteins to reduce mucus viscosity in chronic airway diseases [2.4.1]. Mechanism of action

Cytoprotective agents like bismuth and sucralfate bind to mucosal proteins to form a physical barrier over lesions; mucolytics like N-acetylcysteine reduce the viscosity of mucosal proteins (mucins) by breaking disulfide bonds; 5-ASA enhances the expression of mucosal proteins to support barrier integrity [2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3, 2.4.1].
