For instance, mucosal protectants like sucralfate form a physical barrier over ulcerated tissue by binding to exposed proteins, and bismuth subsalicylate provides a coating effect in the gastrointestinal tract (PubChem, 2024; https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Bismuth-subsalicylate). Additionally, lubricants such as hypromellose supplement the natural tear film on the ocular mucosal surface to treat dry eye. Because this target encompasses a broad range of physical and chemical entities, pharmacological interventions are typically non-specific and focused on local, topical effects rather than systemic signaling pathways.
