In pharmacological contexts, this category is often used as a placeholder for drugs that exert their effects through non-specific physical interactions rather than binding to a single molecular receptor. For instance, sucralfate treats peptic ulcers by binding to albumin and fibrinogen on the mucosal surface to form a protective barrier (PubChem, 2024) [3]. Similarly, bismuth compounds and alginates provide cytoprotection by coating the mucosal lining or forming physical rafts to prevent irritation (StatPearls, 2023) [4]. Dysfunction of these mucosal components is a hallmark of diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and cystic fibrosis, where the barrier integrity or viscosity is compromised.
