The phrase "and associated contaminants" is not part of a standard biological target name but typically refers to debris, bacteria, or non-specific proteins trapped within the mucus matrix, often mentioned in the context of sample preparation for microscopy (Costerton et al., 1981; PubMed: 7024454).
