Mucosal surface hydration refers to the water content within the mucus layers covering mucosal epithelial surfaces. Proper hydration involves a complex interplay between mucin secretion (notably by goblet cells and submucosal glands), active ion transport (mainly via CFTR, ENaC, and aquaporins), and regulation of water movement across epithelial barriers[3][5]. Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining mucus as a lubricating and protective barrier that traps pathogens and particles, supports normal epithelial function, and prevents tissue injury or infection. Dysregulation of mucosal hydration contributes significantly to human diseases, notably cystic fibrosis, where defective ion/water transport leads to dehydrated, sticky mucus and impaired clearance[3][5].
