The mucosal surface of the throat comprises the mucous membranes lining the pharynx and larynx. This tissue consists of a stratified or pseudo-stratified epithelial layer attached to a connective tissue called lamina propria, often underlain by a thin muscle layer (muscularis mucosae). It performs barrier, immunological, and lubricant functions, helping to trap and clear pathogens, humidify and protect the airway, and defend underlying tissues from mechanical or chemical injury. It is not a single molecule, but a complex, functionally integrated tissue essential for respiratory and digestive tract health. Although localized drug delivery (e.g., throat sprays, anesthetics, antiseptics) does interact with this region for therapeutic purposes, “mucosal surface of the throat” should not be used as a canonical drug target name for molecular or pharmacological databases.
